One of the most difficult sounds in the French language is the long a sound \\\u0101\\, pronounced like the “ay” in “may”. There are many ways to spell it, including -ait, -et, and more. Two especially difficult suffixes to differentiate between that make this sound are \u00e9 and \u00e9e. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In French, -\u00e9 is the masculine past participle. You can confirm if your word contains this root by asking about it – be sure to include the stem, its language of origin, and its meaning (“does this word contain the French masculine past participle -e?”). You can do the same for -\u00e9e, which is the feminine past participle ending. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additionally, -\u00e9 is usually at the end of adjectives (like engag\u00e9, d\u00e9collet\u00e9, and glac\u00e9), while -\u00e9e is more commonly seen at the end of nouns (like all\u00e9e, bouch\u00e9e, and chauss\u00e9e).  <\/p>\n\n\n\n
